Loving Across Differences

How can engaging with nature bridge divides and foster love across differences?

We are applying for a grant to explore that question on Out There Podcast, and we’re looking for people to interview.

Have you had an experience outdoors that caused you to love someone despite — or even because of — your differences? Are you interested in being interviewed about it for the podcast? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

Remember, love comes in many forms. We’re not just talking about romance.

 For example...

  • Are you a scientist who made a breakthrough about the natural world, thanks to an unlikely ally? How did you come to love each other’s differences?

  • Did you grow up in a close-knit urban community where you forged deep connections with people from different racial or socioeconomic groups through an outdoor staple (eg. a local park, community garden, or empty lot)? Tell us about an experience that helped bridge cultural barriers.

  • Has cultivating self love (eg. through forest bathing or a much-needed backcountry trip) caused you to be more compassionate to others? How has that manifested itself?

  • Were you a refugee who developed a kinship with someone very different from you, as you migrated to safety? In what ways did the outdoors shape that bond?

  • On the flip side, when is it misguided to bridge divides? Have you had an experience in nature that made you stop trying to reconcile differences and cut ties with someone?

These are just a few examples to get the ideas flowing; we’re eager to hear about your own personal journeys, emotions and experiences.

We are particularly interested in hearing from women, QTBIPOC, and others who are often sidelined.

Out There has a deep commitment to centering diverse voices and perspectives.

If you’re interested in sharing your story with Out There, please fill out this form by Feb. 16. Looking forward to hearing from you!
